WPSU Penn State offers a unique opportunity to advance the career development of an aspiring sales professional through a paid internship. Interns will work for 8 hours/week for 14 weeks at $13.00/hour. Familiarity with the NPR style of news reporting is a plus. The successful applicant will have some reporting experience, an understanding of news value, and be an energetic self-starter who takes initiative. They will receive guidance and editing throughout the semester to improve their reporting, writing and voicing. The intern will come up with story ideas, research news topics, set up and conduct interviews, and produce air-ready final products. The radio news intern will work closely with the WPSU-FM news team to create local news stories that will air on WPSU and publish across the station’s digital platforms. Our interns have won Hearst Awards for their work with WPSU, and recent graduates of our internship program include a TV anchor in Bangor, Maine, a podcast producer for HuffPost in New York City, a politics reporter for in Washington D.C. This internship is for up to 90 hours for the fall semester at $13.00 per hour. Interns will leave with a better understanding of what it means to be a professional content creator. Interns will experience all aspects of the production process including project development, planning, pre-production, production, and post-production. Duties will include assisting with shoots and edits, research, transcribing, logging footage, creating their own stories and pieces, and other support of WPSU projects. Interns will work on studio and field productions. Interns will work closely with producers, videographers, and editors to assist in creating content for WPSU-TV, WPSU Digital Studios, and Penn State clients. The panel will be moderated by Arun Venugopal, senior reporter for the WNYC Race & Justice Unit.WPSU is a public media station serving over 1.9 million households in Central Pennsylvania. Panelists include Wai Chu, Senior Director of Culinary Workforce Development Programs at Hot Bread Kitchen, Caroline Shin, food journalist and writer covering immigrant food stories, and Krishnendu Ray, Professor of Food Studies and Director of the Food Studies PhD program at NYU. Panel Discussion (7PM–9PM): Storytellers Michelle Carlo and Jamie Brickhouse share tales behind their own family recipes, leading to a panel discussion focused on the challenges and opportunities faced by immigrant food entrepreneurs in New York City.Spice Swap: Bring a spice that represents something about a personal family story and be a part of a spice swap, courtesy of Burlap and Barrel.Story Booth: Pull up a seat at our “story booth” to share a story behind a spice or family recipe that might air on Morning Edition and All Things Considered on WNYC.Recipe Share: Pick out your favorite family recipe and bring it with you-The Queens Memory Project will be on hand to scan recipes that will be compiled and shared by Gothamist, and possibly included in a future Queens Memory cookbook.‘Tis the season to enjoy an evening of storytelling, education, and food and celebrate the diverse cultural heritage of our communities through treasured recipes and stories that unite us all!
